What Is a Credenza?
A credenza is a low, long sideboard or cabinet — typically 24-36 inches tall and 48-72 inches wide — with a combination of drawers, shelves, and cabinet space. In MCM design, credenzas often feature tapered legs, sliding or tambour doors, and beautiful wood grain finishes.
Where to Use It
Living room: As a media console, bar cabinet, or display surface for art and objects. The low profile keeps sightlines open and the room feeling spacious.
Dining room: As a buffet for serving and storage. The surface is perfect for displaying ceramics, candles, and seasonal arrangements — a perfect spot for a sculptural accent.
Bedroom: As a dresser alternative or TV console. The horizontal format works beautifully in bedrooms with lower ceilings.
Home office: As a storage and display unit behind a desk. It adds warmth and character to a workspace.
What to Look for
- Solid wood or quality veneer construction
- Smooth-operating doors and drawers
- Tapered or hairpin legs for that signature MCM lift
- A length proportional to your wall — leave at least 12 inches on each side
Styling the Surface
The top of a credenza is prime real estate. Style it with a mix of heights — a tall lamp, a medium vase, a low stack of books — and leave some breathing room. Less is always more.
